Reinvent Yellow Sales has acquired the international sales rights to FREEFALL, a high-concept survival thriller directed by Finnish filmmaker Jyri Kähönen and written by Aleksi Puranen (Heavy Trip, 2018). Produced by Whatever Pictures and Star Mountain Pictures, the English-language feature is scheduled for production in 2027.
Set against the vast and unforgiving wilderness of Finnish Lapland, the film follows two estranged friends whose sightseeing flight turns into a desperate fight for survival when their pilot dies mid-air. Trapped aboard a failing aircraft drifting, the women must confront not only the dangers surrounding them but also the secrets and betrayals threatening to tear them apart.
Combining high-stakes action with intense psychological drama, FREEFALL is a contained, character-driven survival thriller exploring trust, guilt and the struggle between control and surrender. With its claustrophobic setting aboard a small aircraft and the breathtaking Arctic landscape as its backdrop, the film brings together visceral tension and emotional depth.
Director Jyri Kähönen says: “I was immediately captivated by the concept of two people trapped in a small aircraft after their pilot dies. I want to push these characters to their physical and emotional limits, forcing them to confront the painful truths of their shared past. With Freefall, my ambition is to create a visually striking, character-driven thriller that feels much bigger than its scale and budget suggest. It’s an intimate story with enormous stakes, where even the smallest details can create extraordinary tension.”
Synopsis:
When British nurse Olivia Hart reunites with her estranged Finnish friend Ella for a flight over the frozen wilderness of Lapland, their trip turns into a nightmare as the pilot dies mid-air. With no flying experience, failing equipment and a violent winter storm closing in, the women face a desperate fight for survival.
But when Olivia discovers a hidden drug shipment and realizes Ella has deliberately put her in danger, their fragile trust shatters. Thousands of feet above the Arctic, the two must confront the secrets of their shared past, knowing that their only chance of survival may depend on trusting the very person who betrayed them.
