Never before – nor after – had Nemesis, the goddess of Justice and Revenge been busier: only five months after the end of World War II leaders from the wining nations arranged the Nuremberg trials, where twenty-four leading German political or military leaders were accused of various crimes against humanity, murder and/or abuse of prisoners, war attacks, breaches of peace etc. Only three of the men were acquitted, most of the others declared guilty and executed.The film initiated and produced by Tore Sjöberg, opens by showing the hanging – in public - of four German soldiers in Russian Charkov already in 1943; the rest is focused on the events in Nuremberg, and on the rise and fall of the Nazi empire. Some of the material is the same as was used as evidence during the trial. The Swedish censorship demanded four cuts in the film; Sjöberg appealed against this decision, and finally the government approved the original, unedited version to be released.
