A remote Norwegian village in the 1930s. Siss and Unn, both eleven, meet when Unn joins Siss's class, and are drawn to each other with an intensity neither can name. One evening at Unn's house, where she lives with her aunt, the two are thrown into the first real emotional confrontation of their young lives. The next morning Unn cannot face Siss, and instead walks out into the frozen landscape and disappears inside the great ice waterfall. Search parties find nothing. Siss withdraws from everyone and endures a long winter alone, until the spring thaw gives Unn back to her, and the village helps her return to life. A remote Norwegian village in the 1930s.
