Today, SF Studios announces its new feature film, The Trip to Piedmont (Resan till Piemonte), directed by EFA-nominated Alexandra-Therese Keining, who also has written the screenplay based on an original idea. The film brings together four of Sweden’s most beloved actors – Helena Bergström, Kjell Bergqvist, Björn Kjellman, and Kajsa Ernst – in a rare ensemble collaboration.
A heartwarming feelgood story set against the stunning backdrop of Italy, The Trip to Piedmont explores friendship and the beauty of second chances. Filming is currently underway in Italy, with the Swedish theatrical premiere slated for 2026.
Four friends, all recently retired, embark on a journey to Italy, where Eva has inherited an olive grove. What begins as a straightforward trip to settle legal affairs and arrange a sale soon turns into something more. Once there, a question emerges: what, if anything, is truly waiting for them back home in Sweden?
Italy, on the other hand, offers sunshine, delicious food, and charming villagers. And isn’t it in life’s later years that one should seize the day and finally make those long-held dreams come true?
The four friends are played by some of Sweden’s most beloved actors: Helena Bergström (House of Angels, Under the Sun), Kjell Bergqvist (Tabu, Evil), Björn Kjellman (Adam and Eve, All Things Fair), and Kajsa Ernst (Dalecarlians, Tove). Together, they have appeared in over 250 film and television productions, earned 11 Guldbagge Award nominations, and won five Guldbagge Awards. Their films have collectively drawn more than 27,6 million cinema-goers in Sweden.
The ensemble also consists of Peter Haber and Peter Dalle with part of the cast consisting of Italian actors.
”I have longed to make an ensemble film about timeless friendship, and bringing an original idea to life in one of the world’s most beautiful places feels fantastic. On top of that, being able to unite Sweden’s leading actors with their Italian colleagues in a wildly fun feature film is a creative adventure I am incredibly excited about!”, says Alexandra-There Keining, director.
European Film Award-nominated Alexandra-Therese Keining has previously directed Kiss Me (2012), Girls Lost (2016), and The Average Color of the Universe (2021). Her films have achieved international success, competing at the Toronto, Cannes, London, and Rome film festivals, and have been sold to over fifty countries.
The Trip to Piedmont is produced by Jonathan Ridings and Jon Nohrstedt for SF Studios, in co-production with SVT and Film i Väst, with support from the Swedish Film Institute, the Nordic Film & TV Fund, Film Commission Torino Piemonte, and the Italian tax rebate program for film production. The film is shot in Italy in collaboration with LUME Productions. REinvent handles international sales.
