Lukas Moodysson’s TOGETHER 99 Selected for Toronto International Film Festival 2023
Lukas Moodysson’s TOGETHER 99 will celebrate its World Premiere at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentations Program.
TOGETHER 99 is the follow up to Moodysson’s hit TOGETHER (2000), a huge success with audiences and critics around the world. This marks the 5th time award-winning director Lukas Moodysson has had a film selected at Toronto International Film Festival. Moodysson has previously directed iconic films such as Show Me Love (1998), Together (2000), Lilya 4-ever (2002), We Are the Best! (2013) and the series “Gösta” (2019).
TOGETHER 99 tells the story of a group of very different individuals who in 1975 lived in a commune called “Together”. Now it is 1999, 24 years later, and the collective has turned into the world’s smallest. The commune consists of only two people – Göran and Klasse. Feeling a bit lonely, the idea of a reunion with their old friends comes up and Klasse decides to surprise Göran on his birthday…
SF Studios will release the film in Sweden on October 13. REinvent sells the film internationally. TOGETHER 99 has been pre-sold to Benelux (September Film) and to the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Film Europe).
Lukas Moodysson comments on the selection, “It turned out exactly as I hoped. World premiere in Toronto. A nice city and a great festival that has always been supportive of my work.”
“The fact that Lukas Moodysson’s Together 99 will celebrate its World premiere in Toronto is a triumph. We can’t wait to present this warmhearted and amazing film to Moodysson fans and I feel confident that they will laugh and cry with our old friends from the commune who have now been gathered again after 24 years,” says REinvent CEO, Rikke Ennis.
“During Cannes Film Festival we noticed a huge buzz on the film as we presented a promo to international buyers,” said Helene Aurø, Sales and Marketing Director at REinvent. “We are certain that Together 99 will find audiences all over the world and we expect to close several deals in the months to come.”
Yaba Holst, Head of Nordic Acquisition SF Studios adds, “Toronto Film Festival is the people’s film festival and the perfect venue for this most joyful journey back in time of the beloved characters of Together 99. As thrilled and proud co-producers we wish Lukas Moodysson and his team the best fortune, meeting one of the best audiences and marketplaces ever…”
TOGETHER 99 is produced by Memfis Film with producers Lars Jönsson and Anna Carlsten, in co-production with Film i Väst, SF Studios and Zentropa Entertainments, with support from the Swedish Film Institute, Det Danske Filminstitut and Nordisk Film & TV Fond. SF Studios will distribute the film in the Nordics and REinvent handles international sales.
The film is written and directed by award-winning director Lukas Moodysson, the director of iconic films such as Show Me Love (1998), Together (2000), Lilya 4-ever (2002), the international film Mammoth (2009) and We Are the Best! (2013). Moodysson recently directed the series, “Gösta” (2019) for HBO.
Gustaf Hammarsten returns in the role as Göran, the sweet-hearted, conflict-avoiding character that the commune used to centre around, and Shanti Roney plays his friend Klasse. Also back in their roles from Together are Anja Lundqvist, Olle Sarri, Jessica Liedberg, Lisa Lindgren, Cecilia Frode, Lars Frode, Henrik Lundström and Sten Ljunggren. Also invited to the reunion are the new cast members David Dencik, Jonas Karlsson, Clara Christiansson Drake and Julia Heveus.
Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 7-17, 2023.
