Sweet Pea
A recurring theme in the stories of Astrid Lindgren is the lack of sympathy and sometimes downright cruelty, many adults display towards children, and the successful way children in her tales cope with it.”Sweet Pea” is one of these. Left in the charge of two aunts while her mother is in hospital with a possibly fatal disease, ”Sweet Pea” is treated with hostile indifference by her aunts and unfairly made to do most of the chores around the house, while her spoiled cousin Berit receives all the love and attention. When she is thoughtlessly sent out in a thunder storm to buy flour, on her return Sweet Pea finally rebels by telling her aunts and cousin that she doesn’t give a damn about any of them.
