Ronia, The Robber's Daughter
The night Ronia was born a thunder-storm raged through the mountains so violently that all the goblinfolk, the little people in Matt’s forest crept in terror into their holes and hiding places. Only the fierce death birds enjoyed this weather and they flew, shrieking and hooting, round the robbers’ stronghold on Matt’s mountain. Ronia’s life began very dramatically when lightning struck that very night, cleaving Matt’s fortress right down the middle. But Matt was so overjoyed about the birth of his daughter that he didn’t mind much. His line would continue, while Borka’s – his archenemy and the age-old archenemy of all the Matts – would die out. When Matt announced to his robbers that he now had an heir, while Borka didn’t and would never likely have one, they were as happy as he was. But he was wrong. The same nightRonia was born, a son was born to Borka. His name was Birk. Ronia and Birk are destined to meet, and when they do they become friends. It is at this time that the rivalry between the Borkas and the Matts reaches the most violent phase in its long history. Ronia and Birk find themselves in the middle of this feud, and the only way they can go on seeing each other is to flee into the deep forests, where their own adventures begin…
