Young Anders dreams of becoming a writer but is trapped in a squalid working class neighbourhood. His father is an alcoholic with a gambling problem and his mother a laundress. When Anders is asked to come to Stockholm to discuss his book, everybody is exited. Unfortunately his returns without a publishing deal and the disappointment is big. When Elsie, his girlfriend, becomes pregnant he seeks advice with his parents, but they start fighting.
